Smell under immediate Dentures

I had all my top teeth removed yesterday and an immediate denture fitted. When I take it out to clean it smells absolutely horrendous. I keep getting an awful taste too. I saw the dentist today to help take it out for the first time and he didn't mention it as being an issue but I feel it's gotten worse even since then. Is this normal? I'm hoping it's just the healing taking place under them. This experience so far has been nothing short of traumatic. The pain, the drooling, the smell and the shock of seeing myself with no top teeth and not being able to eat.

Everything you have just wrote is exactly how my experience was. The smell is normal. Its horrible, I know, but completely normal. I cant remember how long it lasted for me but it felt like it took forever to finally go away. I think its just from all the blood being smushed up underneath your denture. I always worried I had or would get an infection or dry socket. I didn't.

From my personal experience, with a full set of dentures, it gets better. It just takes a lot of patience and time. Especially learning to eat and talk with them in. I found just wearing them as much as possible helped. But as for the bad taste and smell all you can do is rinse your mouth and keep it clean.

Hello. And hang in there. Its totally going to be worth it. At least that's what I keep telling myself. Had my uppers out this December 19th. Slapped Hollywoods ( my immediate dentures) right in. The smell is absolutely awful under mine. It's normal as far as I found out. What's not is leaving the upper pallet of my dentures all rough and a lil jagged. I mean really?? My gums hurt and all. But this spot was killing me. Wasn't waiting...shaved it down a bit..Ahhhh. But come on Aspen!! Eight grand and I mean it was jagged. This goes against the roof of my mouth people. Can't even pay for good service these days.

I don't even understand why dentist put teeth in your mouth after having them extracted. The smell your smelling is dry blood and it's being captured under the plates of course it has no place to go or to ventilate. It just doesn't make sense to have dentures in your mouth right now in till 6 day weeks when your gums heal so you can get a proper fitting and actually be able to start teething...I don't know I think we get so caught up with vanity that we willing to go through a lot of physical pain. I wish you well.

sorry I was doing voice text but what I was saying after the normal healing process from six to eight weeks then when they put your teeth in your mouth you'll be able to eat. So what was the purpose of getting immediate dentures when it makes you miserable. I am a authority on dentures I have had them since 1999.

I cannot afford 2 months off work - I am a lecturer and a teacher and my voice is essential - as is my appearance. For me, vanity is in the eyes of the client.

Had immediate/permanent denture placed same day as extractions. No problems, no odor. I would think as a lecturer, the sooner you get used to speaking with your dentures the better! Good luck!

Thank you so much for the replies. I've had to call a dentist and waiting on them getting back to me because the pain where the denture is digging into my gums has now reached intolerable levels. It's so hard to see that all of this will be worth it at the moment. I'm absolutely exhausted. Is that normal? I really don't feel very well and now I'm starting to worry. Trying to rationalise that the pain, lack of food, lack of sleep ect is making me feel unwell. I just want to be okay again.
I'm sorry if I sound like a whiner.

Youre not a whiner. We have all been there and you just put your mouth through a lot of hell. That's what this community is here for. I was so thankful to find it and now am happy I can help others with questions and concerns using my own experience as reference. It does get better, it just takes time.

I’m in my first week ,day 8 and feeling everything you’re feeling , it’s good to know it’s going to be better. Not sleeping , lost 6 pounds, in pain. Praying this is better soon. I’m doing salt water rinses 4 to 5 times a day, mouthwash rinses ,and the taste in my mouth is horrible.. I’m glad I found this site

I’m on day 4 the first day I completely regretted the choice to get top dentures the dentures gagged me so bad! Next day was much better but eating is a challenge but I have been able to eat mostly what I want as long as I cut it extremely small like pancakes , chicken patty, hot dog . Takes me so long to eat now . The taste is horrible and today is the first day I experienced that horrid smell! I wonder if I had a few abscess when my teeth was pulled and that’s the taste and smell because I no longer have bleeding. My gums look so scary and my lip is still puffy I’m hoping this isn’t from the dentures and it’s just from the swelling! We got this we just have to keep working at it

I had my teeth out and put right in 40 years ago.  I wasn't allowed to take them out for I believe 2-3 weeks.  I did not have much pain and or drainage.  just ate really soft stuff.  I Did not have a odor.
It was not bad at all.  Hang in there.

You have to accept your new look (no teeth on top), there's no going back.  Just keep in mind that you made this change for better health.  You couldn't keep on living with painful, infected teeth--that just was not a healthy choice.  Keep going back for adjustments.  Your dentist owes you a pain-free outcome.  Keep rinsing with salt water to help the healing of your gums.  I'm still making the adjustment to my new eating/look 8 months into the process.  I have my final teeth, but eating is not the way it was before.  We've been through great trauma with this adjustment and it will take a while for complete acceptance.

Just had my top teeth out and immediate denture put in 3 days ago. The taste in my mouth is so awful and the smell is disgusting. I finally took them out and gave my mouth a rinse. I thought that would get rid of the taste but it came back within minutes once I put the dentures back in.  My gums look frightening! I suspect it is all part of the healing process.

@lisa_raeburn_primeau I also had this happen to me I thought I was going to puke from the smell! Something I had never smelled before, it did go away but still to this day don’t know what it was. Only thing I could find when reading was that the sutures could put off an awful smell!!

Hi, I have teeth removed dec 16. Then had Temps put in 2 weeks later. My gums had healed very fast. But the liner they used burned so very bad. After the first day of wearing uppers and lowers I got sick. I could taste horrid taste. It Def wasn't from blood as my gum were healed fast. My sinuses, my eyes started hurting , now I'm so nausea it's unreal. I soaked the teeth in bleach water. I've tried everything. All food and drinks taste like the nasty sickening smell. I cleaned teeth good and smelled them and it's Def has that sick smell. I feel like the teeth or what ever they used poisoned me or caused allergy. My stomach hurts n I can't stand eat ot drink. 1week today and I'm leaving them out yet my food n drink still taste and it truly mks you nauseated. 3000 to just get this sick? My legs hurt so bad I can barely walk and all I've been doing is dozing with out the teeth. Any suggestions. I don't think that smell will ever go away from those teeth. Maybe I'm badly allergic to the pink acrylic.  I guess it is. Any help deeply appreciate it.
