How I remove denture adhesive from gums and pallet (I use Secure but this can work for others)

I see this question A LOT on this forum so I will start a brand new thread on the method I use to remove Secure or other "Cream" Type adhesives from my gums and pallet.  First, if you use only powder, you generally don't have this issue as it pretty much dissolves by the end of the day.

Some have suggested hot beverages like tea, but I like to use either of the following two products, although disposable paper towels are an option too:

1.  Clean It Denture Wipes (essentially mini-paper towels - not like Wet Naps).  These seem expensive to me and I use them only "on the go", on vacation or for a quick cleanup.

https://www.amazon.com/Clean-Denture-Wipes-40-Count-Pack/dp/B001GCVJHE/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&q...

2.  Microfiber Towels/Cloths from Home Depot, Amazon or anywhere really.

http://www.homedepot.com/p/HDX-Microfiber-Towel-Set-18-Pack-7-516/203837988

At 18 or 24 for $8.97, these are both cheap and effective.  I rewash separately in Hot Water and don't use Dryer Sheets or Fabric Softener.  This is obviously the "Greener" option.  They also work great in my experience.  In addition, I use them to wipe any residual adhesive from my dentures and to dry them after their daily bath with cleaning tabs.   The link above is for the Orange/Gray HDX ones as my wife uses the Blue ones for dusting and other household purposes.  The color coding system works very well for us.  Anything other than Blue is for Dentures in our house.

Find what works best for YOU as with anything denture related.

I hope you find this tip helpful and feel free to ask me any questions you may have.

The microfiber cloth works out really well for me - I've got a stack of them beside the sink.  One acts like a pad between the dentures and the sink while I glue/clean/dry/etc and the others are doing exactly what you suggest.

Thanks Ted

Sorry I'm so late to the party here, but I'm a new denture wearer. Still on my temporaries. I've been pulling my hair out trying to find an adhesive that would work well for me. Everything I've tried, Fixadent, Sea Bond and the paper ones you have to trim. Those gave me the most success, and with no residue, but if I tried to eat, my dentures come right out of my mouth. So now, I have found the perfect adhesive for me. It's Poligrip "Extra Care". It's claim is that it 'prevents gum irritation'. I am here to tell ya that this stuff is the bomb! My dentures are now so comfortable that I forget I have them in. Twice now, I've gone to bed and forgotten to take them out. BUT...the problem remains that even though it works SO well, the adhesive is incredibly difficult to remove. I've practically glued my mouth shut trying to get the goo out. Because it's gooey, it makes me gag a little. So, I'm going to try the product that you suggest, Ted. My next idea was warm olive oil to see if it would make my mouth so slick that the stuff would just come out with no problem. Thanks for everyones feedback!

I've tried mouthwash and a soft cloth but it didn't work fast enough for me! Spent about 15 to 20 minutes trying to get all the adhesive off of my gums. Finally tried warm salt water and a soft cloth. WOW..worked like a charm.! Cut my post removal time down to about 5 minutes! Good Luck

I use 3 min polident clearner and add baking soda. secure is gone and my dentures are clean. i have use 91% rubbing alcohol and it melts it off on the inside of the denture. Rinse well. Secure has to be on a clean dry denture and dry your gums. It comes loose with hot beverages, and citrus and vinegar foods break it down and dentures come loose . Secure works better than anything i have tried. i order off it off
amazon.

I am new to Immediate Dentures.  Had 22 teeth removed in Sept 2019.  Use Poligrip.  Hate the goo that is left on my gums.  Have read tons of ideas on this Forum (thanks!) but no great solutions.  I went out & found GUM brand brushes. They are tiny and can be used over again.  I put the brush where the goo is & twirl it.  It is quite good at grabbing the goo, then wipe off & do it again.  They are soft & don't hurt gums.  Anybody else use this method?

What do you use to clean the glue off the inside of your mouth? I use the smallest amount possible of Poligrip, or Fixodent and get a great hold all day. So great, I have a very hard time removing the denture! And there's always a thin film of the glue on my pallet and gums that requires a lot of rinsing.
So I find I prefer Sea Bond. The only draw back is trimming each sheet to fit each morning

So, are you saying, I use one of these towels inside my mouth to clean the denture adhesive off the inside of my mouth?

Nope, I don't think so.
I experimented with hot water and salt and that works. Put some sea salt in a 6 oz glass of hot water (hot as is comfy, not so hot that you burn yourself) swish, rinse, spit, take another small mouthful, rub the tongue on the palate and upper gums with that salt water still in your mouth,, swish, spit. Repeat a few times.
It cleans out the gunky adhesive and is soothing

"Nope, I don't think so" what?
Maybe you should actually READ my original post since I outline the whole process IN DETAIL and even address your point above?
"Some have suggested hot beverages like tea, but I like to use either of the following two products..."
"I (wash) rewash separately in Hot Water and don't use Dryer Sheets or Fabric Softener.  This is obviously the "Greener" option.  They also work great in my experience."
Clean and sterile Microfiber Clothes work very well for many people and I don't have the problem with "residual film" that you mention.
Good luck rinsing again and again with Secure or Olivafix using your method.
Everyone needs to find what works BEST for THEM.

There's no need to be snarky. You were NOT clear as to whether the micro fiber cloths can be used inside the mouth. I read and re-read your post. The posts above write about cleaning the dentures, nothing is written specifically about cleaning the inside of the mouth.
"Nope, I don't think so" means I don't think I want to use that micro fiber cloth inside my mouth.
I could be wrong.
So far the hot salt water is working for me.

I'm in Australia and have started using Fittydent adhesive, which is what Secure is branded over here. I use a toothbrush to get the leftover adhesive of my gums and roof of mouth. I can feel where it is with my tongue, so just wipe along it with the brush and out it comes. While my denture is much more securely with the Fittydent, I had much much more trouble getting polydent off my gums.

I also use a soft/medium wide bristle toothbrush to get the adhesive off of my gums. Mainly my upper gums because I do not use adhesive on my lower dentures since I adhered 'Stabildent' on my bottom denture. I do use secure bond adhesive so if my top dentures are still tight by bedtime I will just brush them before going to sleep and then soak them in the morning or if I happen to get up in the middle of the night to go to the restroom. Before this, I was taking them out and it was tearing up my gums.  But I'm not inclined to use any other adhesive right now because Secure Bond has done the trick for me.

I read alcohol is good to use on your dentures butt you should not put alcohol in your mouth. So I thought why not use alcohol you can put in your mouth. Take a shot of your favorite alcoholic beverage like rum or whisky and swish around for a minute or two. Unfortunately you should not swallow, butt it does remove the gummy film in your mouth and leaves a good flavor.

Guess I am different from everyone else. After I remove my dentures, I just put a sugar free piece of peppermint candy (small rounded ones) in my mouth and by the time it is gone so is the left-over adhesive on my gums! Sometimes I have quite a lot of adhesive left in my mouth too!
