The Euthanasia of Teeth 20 to 29----Taking the Implant Plunge!
Where do I start? First off my situation. I have partials on top and bottom. The nine teeth left on the bottom are deteriorating by the moment. The lower partial has been a nightmare. I have seen 6 different specialist. Inquired about mini-implants but every Doc said it wouldn't hold due to lack of bone. **(I place dentist in the same category as used car salesman as they are always trying to up sale). I had one dentist who said he wouldn't even suggest implants because of my gum disease.
After all research and my Doc hopping I decided to go with the first one I saw. I am going to have 9 teeth extracted, 3 dental implants put in and my top partial replaced for a fee of $13,000 bucks.......Yes that is THIRTEEN FREAKING THOUSAND FREAKING DOLLARS! Please allow me to repeat that one more time THIRTEEN FREAKING THOUSAND FREAKING DOLLARS!!!!! The irony is that even if the process is a complete success, I will not have any money to buy any FOOD TO EAT. So it could all be moot with me walking around demanding people look at my bottom teeth and to compliment them profusely.
Now, setting that aside, I am scared (well you know what they say ..something LESS! I have had open heart surgery plus stroke(2009) and bilateral hip replacement (2000) and am worried about the potential of stroke and heart attack. I am having to go off my heart meds for three day and have started antibiotics. All blood work looks good. I was concerned when my surgeon said he is more concerned with strokes than heart problems with implant patients.
The reason I selected this Dent/Doc was that he has done more of these than anyone in Dallas. And my research showed that many Dentist will take a weekend course to learn how to do implants and some of them line up patients prior to even taking the course. The price range for the services I required went from $8,000 to $23,000. And if there is one IMPORTANT point I would suggest to everyone ....is to beware of hidden cost because every single dentist I saw did not give the FULL price in the first quote even though I asked that they include everything in their proposed plan. You really have to make a complete list yourself that includes anesthesia, temporary dentures, bone grafts, bone shaving, perm dentures, and the list goes on. Also remember if they do it all *IN house or you will find yourself with another set of charges and another office to visit and more hidden cost.
There is a real emotional part to this I wasn't expecting. I am 57. I worked as a model in my youth and later became a TV/Radio host. I have never thought of myself as having an ego or (too) much concern with the aging process. But this one got me. I will be the first in my group to have dentures and that, as they say and no pun intended, is a real kick in the teeth. A yet having been through open heart surgery, this seems to pale in comparison. So I will just buck up to that.
This board has helped me through this decision process. I am sure there are others and I don't recall how I ended up here and will try to keep you apprised of my progress if it is warranted and I am able. This has been such a mega decision for me and I think it is for most for which dentures are required. I firmly believe that in the future the price for this will HAVE to decrease. You will never convince me that the actual product they are using and the time associate with the process is worthy of such a cost.
**Biggest Rip Off Story.....One Dentist gave me an estimate of $17,000 for lower denture implants. This did not include the denture as I would have to see a "specialist" for that as they did have time or the knowledge to make dentures. So I go to the specialist (hour and a half wait) and he checked me out, measured my mouth and gave me a price of $5,000 and said after the surgery I would see him and the surgeon. When I asked to look at the styles of dentures he made, he informed me that he DIDN'T make the dentures but had another person make them. It was such a WTF moment. In other words, he was just an added cog on the money wheel. Such a rip off, I was so offended and I basically got them to admit it was a totally useless and unnecessary added element.
I am also a writer and just for a fun cathartic experience I am writing a piece this weekend called The Execution/Euthanasia of Teeth 20 to 29. I want to pay tribute to these teeth and acknowledge the great times, great meals, and great laughs we have had together. We have been through a lot and I will be sorry to see them go.
Sorry for the longevity of this and that it turned out to be a novella. This experience is so unique and only those going through it could relate. Good luck to all of you and please wish me luck and good health. If nothing else you have to laugh ....teeth or no teeth .
