My face is caved in and wrinkled since getting dentures.

I've had lowers for about 2 years and the upper for nearly a year now. I am so depressed because it has aged my face by at least 10 years. I read where so many feel like they like the look of dentures better than their old teeth, but not me. My lips have nearly disappeared. My upper lip is all wrinkled ...like people who have smoked for years get. I have never smoked. My cheeks are concave and jowels drooping. I am 54, but look mid 60 something since getting my teeth out and these dentures in. What's the trick to a good looking smile ??

I've had an upper denture, full, for 18 years. It looked great. Got a new upper in January & look 10 or 15 years older. Can't be bone loss because all my teeth were pulled in 2000 & I looked fine.Comparing pictures of myself from Christmas this past year to pics made a month later with the new teeth & it's truly shocking the difference & not in a good way.  So I'm sure it must be the denture. This is just the temporary & I think I can probably get the permanent now but will NOT be going back to the same place. When I Googled this I found out it's a fairly common problem called "Denture Face" and is caused by poorly made dentures that don't fit your mouth right.

Go to denturestore on etsy and look at this mans work. Read the hundreds of reviews from the satisfied customers he's made happy. I'm convinced that the lab that made mine just didn't care.

I wasted hundreds of dollars at Russell Klein on Etsy. Six months of paying for one wax try-in & impression after another with nothing to show for it. I never communicated with the same person twice. The so called "custom" dentures were so awful they were almost funny. Got several pairs & each succeeding set was worse than the one before. The whole experience was a train wreck. I managed to get a fraction of my money back, but going by what I've seen others post, was lucky to recover anything of what I spent.

It is awesome that you are reporting this information.  There are so many people who have gotten them for free, actually in exchange for recommending the "Russel Klein" ones by making videos or doing write-ups here and on other sites.  The owner, forgot his name, clearly states "No Refunds" and on the Etsy site he clearly states that his product is for educational use only.  Dude took a 6 week lab course and people are giving him thousands of dollars.  Sue him in small claims court, it only costs $35.00 and he will have to pay that fee and extreme emotional distress also!  I'm in the wrong business!

No kidding 1Spicy! I managed to get back part of the cost of the supposed custom Russell Klein dentures I never got, but hundreds of more dollars went for non-refundable costs like impressions they claim weren't right & had to be done over & over again, absolutely ridiculously bad wax try-ins one right after the other for six months, etc. Two or three of the try-ins were identical. I took photos. They were sending me the same ones & claiming they were new ones. I believe they were about $50 a set, so the costs racked up quickly on that stuff. Let's think about it: Hundreds of dollars for unverified & non-refundable costs, per person. Multiply that times hundreds or even thousands of poor suckers like me & it comes out to a healthy profit for delivering the sum total of nothing & wasting someone's time for months & months. Nice little chunk of change, huh? No wonder RK can afford to hire shills to sing the praises of his rip-off racket.

What an ass company.  I may just order them and go through the rip-off process and sue them myself.  Then I can start a class-action suite.  Fuckers.

My tips to not having wrinkles or looking sunken after dentures... I've had full dentures since I was 25 years old. I'm now 43. I have found that adding a soft coat denture liner helps. After you pour it in and give it a few minutes to firm up a bit you put it in your mouth and allow it to flow go over the front and side gum line, lift your lip and push it upwards so it's not oozing over your teeth. It fills out the sunken appearance and makes my lips poke out even prettier than before I had dentures. If your dentures are older you might need to add 2 applications of softcoat (one at a time) to build up the denture. Also, I leave my dentures in 24-7. I only take them out to brush them. Fortunately, my bottom denture has 2 implants so they stay in place.

If this doesn't work for you or you've found that years of sleeping without a denture has caused wrinkles, etc. that don't go away with the softcoat added I recommend also going to a plastic surgeon and having a filler added to plump up your lips and around the mouth where any lines are formed.

I've been having filler in my lips the last few years because I'm getting older and want them fuller, more pouty and youthful-it has nothing to do with my dentures. Fillers will help though. They can make someone who's 50 look 30.  Fillers like juviderm contain hyaluronic acid which helps you build your own collagen around the area it's injected so it's natural and it lasts 6-12 months. I get 1-2 syringes a year added and my doctor charges $600 per syringe.

I hope this helps someone.

I just had extractions and a top denture and notice the area in the middle of my top lip appears sunken!?? I asked the Dentist to have the lab buildup my gums and she said she would make a note but obviously nothing was done!!!

Thank God for the do it yourself relign kit. I've been doing the soft relign myself since the beginning when I realized the lab that made my dentures had the worse reputation and thousands of unsatisfied patients. I just wasn't informed about anything and didn't know that I should have been more pro active in every way before I jumped in. I know so much now but I'm out $6000.00 and my dentures are so awful. I'm happy to say that I'm very confident that Russell Klein at denturestore on etsy.com is going to make me smile again. I've read thru hundreds of the reviews that were posted at his store. He seems to care about his customers/clients/patients.

i had thought, at one time-to do this by mail-but it's really best to find someone to work with you-choosing tooth size/color and shape and having a wax try-in to make sure you're happy and make ALL changes then-i've  said this before-but if you're in a state where DENTURISTS are allowed to practice-go to one of them instead of a dentist or by mail order.

A denturist will be making my dentures.
This is a one-denturist town.
I can only hope and pray that they will do right by me and my very pricey immediate dentures, which will also be my ' permanent' dentures, simply with a hard reline before one-year.
I am concerned. I will never at my age, have again enough money for another set of dentures!

hopefully-that means the denturist has made MANY dentures-just make sure you have a say in size/color and shape of your teeth and that at the wax try-in-you can see if it fits-shows enough teeth and how your face looks when 'at rest' and when you smile-they always seem to want to look at you RIGHT AWAY-what i've learned is-when you put it in-your lips kind of r e l a x after a few minutes-so you might show teeth immediately when you put it in-but then-your face relaxes around this new THING you've just put in there-so let them know that-just give YOU a few minutes to check it out in a good mirror-not that little 'barbie doll' mirror, most dentist have and not laying back in the dentists chair-looking head on into a real mirror.  ALL changes have to be made in wax or that's what it's going to be when it's processed.  i hope they do good for you.

I don’t have or use any. I thought you had a post that said you fix the sunken cupid’s bow issue w/a soft reline material on the gums? Anyway my Dentist is going to have more acrylic added in that area tomorrow at my reline appt!

YouTube reviews sweetie. I've heard from other people, he's the real deal. I am skeptical about him as I am with many others that are online.. My last dentist screwed me over with my new pair, but I got my refund. RK does offer half of your money back, but do know this, he is Not a dentist, but an artist... he is a one-man show. Now, as I've heard, if you have dental insurance, they may be able to reimburse you for the money you spent on your dentures through him. I'm not with RK or any other ones that do this kind of work online, but I damn well will do more research on all dentists, artists, or lab techs before making my decision.

He's absolutely NOT a one-man show. I had a nightmarish experience with him. Paid up front then months & months of being jerked around, paying more & more & never getting anything even remotely wearable. I mean they weren't just not good---they were AWFUL. Didn't fit; the teeth themselves were so bad as to be laughable in a horrible kind of way. Every message was answered by a different person. Nobody ever knew what communication went before. If you take the time to look around forums like this you'll hear plenty of other horror stories about RK. There are (no doubt) paid trolls who gush about how wonderful RK is. Don't believe em.

I have read your comments on about almost every online lab tech, artists, etc.. and you're never happen with anyone and always has something negative to say. I've looked on all forums and see that there are less bad remarks as there are good. So, why didn't you stop sending money after the first couple of tries of the dentures not being right??

Not sure who you have me mixed up with but the only services I've been unhappy with are RK & Affordable Dentures, at least the one in my town. Some are better than others. Mine sucks. If you have time to research all of my remarks & everyone else's comments in general on RK, you need to get a life. As far as why I kept shelling out money to RK, I had hundreds of dollars invested & kept hoping I'd finally end up with something I could actually wear. But I never did & finally demanded & got a refund through Etsy, at least for the original cost. Never recouped all the money that SUPPOSEDLY went for numerous impressions & ridiculous looking wax try-ins.

I'm thinking you're just another paid shill for RK. I have better things to do than engage with a troll & merely wanted to correct the impression you were giving those who don't know better. 'Nuff said.

DEB!!!!  Please come back and let us know if you have Russell Klein make a set for you and how it turned out!  They cost over $1,000 now for a basic set and NO REFUNDS!!!  NO REFUNDS people.

45 Messages

No, there are refunds, but it's only half of what you pay (go back & read).. plus if you have dental insurance, you may be able to have the insurance reimburse you.

45 Messages

RK doesn't accept insurance unless he's just started but I can't see any insurance company accepting a claim from his outfit.

45 Messages

I know he doesnt accept insurance!! smh.. but, if you read what a lot of online dentists, lab tech, etc.. say.. your insurance should reimburse you if you have dental insurance. You need to do a lot of reading up on things cause apparently you dont. Plus, you sound like a bitter person. You could have easily seen after a couple of times that RK wasn't getting something right and stopped forking out so much money, instead you chosed not to. Who's at fault here then? grow up & stop being so bitter towards the man and go to someone else..

lol Bitter? No, honey, just truthful. Your insurance will not reimburse you for unlicensed, non-accredited services. No insurance will. And yes, I'm quite up on what dental insurance will & won't pay. Don't want you to give people the idea that when RK rips them off their insurance company will give their money back because it's simply not true. Please don't spread lies & misleading misinformation.

OMG the original poster sounds exactly like me I could cry hysterically.  I got full dentures 9 years ago at age 28.  My dentist warned me about getting them out so young, but I didn't listen.  All I wanted was a beautiful white smile that I've never had.  As soon as I switched from my temps to my perms my facial structure changed DRAMATICALLY.  My lips already were tiny but the perms made my lips little teeny tiny slits it's so embarrassing :(  After researching I was convinced I'm a freak of nature and it must be because I lost a bunch of bone already from not having lower teeth.  Well, i'm on this denture support group and they really seem to be in denial or something about bone loss/facial collapse so I have a hard time trying to get anyone to understand.  They're all newbies and I'm 9 years out.  I actually made this long post warning newbies about getting all the bottoms out without getting any implants and what ended up happening was I scared everyone or they're in denial and would say "well one photo youre wearing makeup and one you're not"  or "you have bangs in one photo but not in the other" annnd my favorite is "it's part of the aging process"  WTF I'm only 36 not 86 lol  So I end up feeling frustrated that they are in denial.  However I did get some people who reached out and explained it could be my dentures that aren't built up right.  It seems like every time I try to explain this to the dentist they look at me like I'm stupid :(  I'm so depressed I can't even look in the mirror.  I will post photos as soon as I can.  Thank you for making me feel less alone in the world :)

Your not alone. I dont know about the rest of these people but I dont have the money to put fat in my face, or pump up lips.
I spent it all on these bad dentures. Any dentist worth their weight will not pull your teeth. Aspen dental was like selling a time share. I thought well so many people have them. He said if I were his sister he would tell her to do it ( he doesn't have a sister). It just get worse. Sorry. I would love to eat out, put lipstick on again, ect.
They just make these things like it's all for one mouth mold and if you dont fit that your a freak. I'm going out of state and see a dentist that is better informed

the dentist?  looks at you like you're stupid because he doesn't have a clue how to help you-someone out there does-that's what we all want/need to find-someone who won't treat us like they're crazy and actually help us smile again

I have had full dentures since 1990, I was 28. I went to my regular dentist and he informed me that I could have bone loss, but I only take my dentures out twice a day for about 15 minutes for cleaning and I have had very little bone loss in 29 years, and the same pair of perms

You are not alone! It IS your dentures & they CAN be made to fill your face back out & give your missing lips back. Your dentist is playing dumb, don't let him fool you. He knows what Denture Face is & is perfectly aware of what you're trying to convey. He just doesn't want to do anything about it. Did you know you can make your own dentures for almost nothing?

I did my own experiment with gum and chewed like 5 pieces and put them on my top and lower plates and for the first time in 10 years I found my lips!!!!!! A dentist told me that building up the dentures would only help temporarily and basically rained on my parade that I would ever get my old face back. I bawled my eyes out I didn’t even know my lips were still here I thought they disappeared and I cry myself to sleep not able to look at myself in the mirror my face has changed dramatically. :(

I had no freaking choice. My teeth were always abscessed. I was constantly having trigeminal neuralgia attacks because of how bad my teeth were. I couldn’t help it. I am offended by all of these posts saying you must keep your real teeth as long as you can. My mouth felt as though I had hornets stinging it constantly. Most of my teeth had fallen out anyway, just not completely. They had little pieces in each socket. I was so miserable.

Now, my face is collapsing. I still haven’t gotten my dentures fitted because I am struggling to heal. Go ahead, tell me how that is my fault too. I was born with Muscular Dystrophy and Cerebral Palsy. My teeth rotted out no matter what I did. Some of you act like that it is my fault.

To me, dentists are horrible people. They charge so much. I had a good looking face. Physically, as a man who watched his muscles rot from the inside out, that was all I could really be happy about when I looked at myself. Yet, dentists took that from me. Implants would have saved my mouth and my looks.

I had multiple dentists tell me I was far too good looking to have teeth so bad. I couldn’t do anything about it and they never once offered to work anything out. They wanted all of their money at once. Because I am disabled, and because dental insurance through the Obama plan is a joke, I just watched them rot away. Now, I don’t want this life much anymore.
