It’s happening

E-day is on Monday. I picked up my temporaries from my dentist office the other day to bring with me to the oral surgeons. I’ve got to say I’m pleasantly surprised by their aesthetic. They’re not too white, look about the right size and most importantly, the material is surprisingly thin. I was so worried they’d be incredibly bulky but I feel somewhat at ease seeing that they aren’t. I’m still worried about what they’ll look like once they’re in, but right now I’m just happy that they look to be good quality, with slight variations in color and shape, they don’t look perfectly straight, etc. Having said all that, today I’m feeling anxious. Nervous maybe. Or mixed emotions I suppose. It’s been an emotional process and I’m ready for it to just be done, but I’m also afraid of the challenges I’m going to face. Luckily I took 2 weeks off from work to adjust and will spend that time practicing my speech, relearning how to eat, and all that jazz.

In the meantime, if anyone has any suggestions on soft foods that aren’t just ice cream and pudding and jello, I’d love to hear them (especially protein and veggies). I’ve got a list of things I think may work:

-Bouillon (or broth)
-Hummus
-Avocado (guac anyone)
-Sweet potato and potato (for mashing)
-Ricotta
-Cottage cheese maybe
-Yogurt
-Cream of wheat
-Applesauce
-Mashed carrots
-Ensure and/or carnation instant breakfast
-Smoothies (using seedless fruit like peaches and bananas?)

Did anyone have any luck with pasta in the beginning? Regardless I’m open to any and all suggestions :)

Well let me say congratulations on your attitude. That will be your best friend.....
I think the foods you listed are great, personally I tried cottage cheese and it didn't go so well, only because the curds would sneak up and under the denture. I think I lived on yogurt, cream of wheat, oatmeal, & carnation for the first 2 weeks. After that I ventured into mashed cauliflower, cream of broccoli soup, etc., Staying soft but with minimal soft textures. Pasta was doable as well. One thing you have to know is that your bite force takes some time, do not let that discourage you. This is a slow process of trial and error, what you can't eat one week you may be able to the next. Keep positive, we are all here for you to help in anyway we can. Best of luck and stay in site with us.

Thank you! It hasn’t been easy to see the good in this whole ordeal, but I’m trying my hardest to stay positive and set myself up for success. I’m terrified of what’s going to happen on Monday but I’m even more terrified of doing nothing and letting things get worse. This is what I have to do, there’s no getting around it. I have to make the best out of an otherwise awful situation. Mashed cauliflower is a great idea! Haven’t had that in years! I will add that to my running list! Thank you for the suggestion :)

No need to be terrified. The anticipation is way worse than the reality. I only had upper done but I was awake and never felt a minute of discomfort or pain. I didn't even feel the numbing shots, I also had no pain and virtually no swelling afterward.

I’m so glad your experience went so well. I do hope mine is just as smooth. I think you’re right, we tend to get ourselves worked up only find it wasn’t so bad after all... at least not nearly as bad as initially thought

Like you. I tried to stay positive. I had no option so had to make the best of it. Four months in I can honestly say it isn't impacting my life negatively in any way. Putting them in is getting almost second nature and I go about my life. You will too.

What I did was use a blender for all my meals, including steak! First week, that's how I ate, no special meals. After I was healed I started with soft foods and worked up. This way I still got nutrients that I needed to heal. Say away from bread and lettuce for a good while. Rince easy after each meal in the beginning. It is well worth it.

Pasta was one of my first successful meals, of actual food. Just don’t push it. Glad they seem thin, don’t get discouraged when they don’t feel that way at first. Your tongue will be swelled up, it will be huge. This will make it feel like the dentures are too big. They aren’t, but you will feel like there isn’t much space. In 3 /4 days, it will start getting more and more roomy in there.

That seems to be a very common theme... people feeling like their mouth is full, no room, the dentures are too big, etc. which honestly sounds a bit frustrating to me. I’ve been trying really hard to educate myself but that’s one of the things I haven’t quite wrapped my mind around; the way they will feel. Well I suppose I’ll know soon enough, won’t I lol

Yep, you will know soon. The full feeling sucks, but I promise it will go away pretty fast. I’ve had a reline now, so they added stuff to mine. They don’t feel thick even with the extra on it. You just have no make sure you get adjustments so they are comfortable. I wish you the best. Keep us updated!

I have an appointment scheduled for Tuesday morning for adjustments but I suspect I’ll be in my dentists office several times before my little staycation is over. My hope is to make sure I’m in good enough shape with these puppies to return to work “comfortably” in a couple weeks. Wishful thinking? Anyway, I appreciate the encouragement. I’ll be sure to update as soon as I can :)

I was thinking about you a few days ago and remembered you posting that it looked like it would be the 24th.  I know you're not excited lol, but I'm excited for you!  You're going into this with a positive attitude and that honestly helped me SO MUCH.  I did as much talking as I could.  I challenged myself with eating and chewing.  I didn't last too long on soft foods.  I ate about 5 bites of jello and I was done.  I had some chicken and stars soup, some mashed potatoes, and then I started eating Chef Boyardee Spaghetti and Meatballs.  I had a couple of sore spots that made it uncomfortable to chew so sometimes I just swallowed whatever it was I was eating or I mashed it with my tongue and the roof of my mouth. 
Mine felt a little bulky at times but it was mainly when I tried to smile but that went away once the swelling went down and tissues healed.

Thank you Lauren! Today oddly enough I feel much more calm than I was on Friday. I’ve been keeping busy this weekend so that has helped. I’m definitely feeling reassured as far as food options. I guess I was convinced I’d be on a damn-near liquid diet for Weeks or more! I’m so glad that’s doesn’t seem to be the case. I also plan to challenge myself with food (tiny baby steps of course). I just feel like, if I can push myself a little each day, get adjustments when I’m not fully comfortable, and really work hard to embrace this, it can only get better. How long before you were cleared for adhesives?

About a week I needed some. I covered my denture gum line and used powder on the pallet only. Was awesome.

Ready for this? ** pro tip **

I rolled up toilet paper (don’t judge) and wrapped it around the gum line. That way when i put the powder on, no worries about it touching my stitches

I was nervous constantly until I went into surgery lol. I wasn’t sure what to expect when it came to eating and I made a ton of jello expecting I would need it and I ended up not. I think you’ll surprise yourself with what you can do!

Great attitude and great way of looking at it!! I just internally coached myself and knew that I could push through and that it would be difficult for forever.

I wasn’t cleared for adhesive for about a month. He wouldn’t let me use any until all of my extraction sites were healed and closed. Once I was cleared to use it, he asked that I try to only use adhesive that is pink. He wasn’t comfortable with me putting white adhesive or powder on the white soft material that he put in for my adjustments and not being able to tell which is which when I clean them. Also, a little adhesive goes a long way.

Lauren, I totally get that. The nerves are starting to hit me. Probably because it’ll be time for sleep soon and when I wake up I’ll be heading straight to the oral surgeon. But my darling bf has done an outstanding job of keeping me distracted. I belly laughed today harder than I have in a while honestly. Just going to hold on to that feeling until they put me under tomorrow. Got some food prepared and ready to go when I get home and soft squishy ice packs on standby... not sure how I’ll be feeling. Might be hangry, might be tired but either way, I’m prepared.

Thank you for your support and encouragement, both of you. I appreciate it so much and I’m so grateful to have found this group of kind folks who know exactly what I’m going through. It’s nice to know I’m not alone. I’ll update as soon as I can :)

That’s how my mom made it with an egg baked on top in a cast iron pan. I just pan fry it and it’s so satisfying on the flavor scale.

Pasta worked for me as did ice cream and cake. Scrambled eggs and apple sauce were also high on the list. I actually started eating a variety of foods pretty quickly as soon as I was able to use a little bit of adhesive. At first I only used it on the palate but it made a big difference.

I think you'll find yourself  feeling better faster than you think. I had mine done on a Tuesday, took off Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Went back to work on Saturday. I work in retail and was able to speak and interact with no problem. Truth be told, I could have gone back by Friday.
