Can't get my immediate dentures back in
I had my remaining 9 teeth and an implant removed 7 days ago. When the canines were removed, my dentist had to shave the bone above. I was not told to leave the immediate dentures in for 24 hours (at least that I can remember and my husband didn't remember my dentist telling me to leave them in)....I was gagging from the thick saliva and blood mixture and couldn't swallow or even rinse so I took them out after about 5 or 6 hours. I tried to put them back in the next morning but the pain was excruciating.
I went back to the dentist on the 5th day to have sutures removed. They filed down the inner part of the denture but it still wouldn't go in. They said to give it another week.
I have been using ice packs, rinsing three times a day and taking pain killers as needed. I have high blood pressure and I am taking meds that prevent me from taking anti-inflammation drugs.
I am healing nicely, except where the bones were shaved. I just can't get the dentures to pop over this area due to the pain and shape of the denture. I have tried everything.
I go back in 3 days before Christmas for a soft reline and I am worried that I still won't be able to get them back in.
Has anyone else gone through this?

I guess what I'm saying is don't be too worried at this point because apparently what happened is not out of the ordinary. The Dr had told me that the worst would be just having to wait for the dentures to go back in.
Hopefully someone else can address the timeline for the swelling to go down and what can help speed that up.

I took my dentures out after 24-hours (as directed by my dentist) to clean the dentures and to rinse my mouth with salt water. Then, like you, they did not seem to “want to go back in”. So.......
I set the upper in my mouth, then I set the lower in my mouth - not back in place but just in my mouth. I then gently closed my jaws together a little bit, then put the tip of my tongue behind my front uppers and tilted my head up and swallowed strongly several times. Once I felt them to be seated correctly, I kept my tongue behind my upper front teeth for an extra 15-seconds. This method worked great to seat both upper and lower dentures at the same time. It hurt for the few swallows needed, but it was tolerable. I followed this with drinking sips of cold water. In 10-minutes the discomfort was completely gone and the dentures were perfectly seated.
Today, my Day 2, apparently the swelling had increased a bit; but, I used the method above to get my dentures seated again and it worked great.
As I mentioned, I had local anesthesia for my 15 extractions and immediate full upper and lower dentures were put in right away. I use Advil 600 mg every 4-6 hours only to keep down the amount of swelling. I have experienced zero pain since the extractions. I drink a lot of cold water which also helps keep swelling to a minimum.
Oh, for taking my dentures out I take a sip of warm saltwater and sort of ‘smush’ it into the back of my upper denture. This breaks the suction so I dont have to tug on the denture to remove it. It also loosens the lower denture. I do not use any adhesives.
Hope these tips will be beneficial to others.

I got my immediates 3 days ago. The first 24 I did not remove them, yes spitting blood and saliva, gross but to be expected. The 2nd day I STILL DID NOT TAKE THEM OUT! they're kind of loose so I let them loosen up and without removing them, I washed my mouth with warm salt water. Yeah more blood more spit. The night of 2nd day I took them out, cleaned them, rinsed with salt water and put them back in with minimal pain. Today, 3rd day, I took them out in the morning, washed them, rinsed me, etc, then put them back in. Bleeding stopped, swelling starting to diminish. My dentist was not the valedictorian so I used common sense. If my mouth is still swollen, then NO, the device won't go back in without extreme pain. I loosened them for cleaning and salt water rinsing but I did not remove them completely until the swelling started going away. It still hurt a little bit but nothing like some of the experiences I'm reading here. Oh and please note I AM NOT taking pain meds. Not even one. Once the anesthesia wore off I was on my own. I'll come out of this ok but I would not recommend Dr Kris Kasagian. No communication, they rush thru everything and don't consult with the PATIENT! Hello, the patient? The important person who will be doing the suffering?? Smh.

I had the same problem and because of the pain, i sat on the floor and cried. I gathered my composure and decided to soak the denture in very warm salt water for 5 minutes. I rinsed my mouth with as warm of salt water as I could handle and kept it in my mouth for a minute or so. I then coated my front gum's 2 ulcerations with Lidocaine (made for the mouth - its awesome!); then i coated the inside of the denture with Lidocaine (my idea, it makes the denture slippery, which is okay for a super tight denture).
I had realised that the problem was the very back left side, it wasnt quite getting where it needed. So i carefully opened wide and focused on getting that side in position. Once aligned, i finished. I wont lie, still painful as they slid over my front ulcerations, but i had reduced the pain 90%.
My bottoms don't fit at all! So loose the are just sitting there. I can't get a suction.
My appt is Tuesday, in 2 days. I dread it but i hope he can fix this. I have not eaten one bite in 6 days. I'm living on meal replacement drinks and water. My lower floats so bad, i have to keep my tongue on the front to hold them down just to drink.
Good luck. I've read enough to know that most denture wearers can spend a few months workimg through the issues.
