Getting denture adhesive off my gums and the roof of my mouth

I just got my dentures 2 weeks ago. My dentist said I could use the adhesive today. I used it, waited for 45 minutes to eat and it didn't hold at all. So needless to say, I took them out and YUCK! I was gagging and thought I was going to vomit. I was sending myself into a full blown panic attack ! I had it all over my gums and roof of my mouth. I tried a toothbrush, nope. Tryed my fingers, nope. I tried scratching it off gently with a finger nail but didn't get much so I had to leave the rest in. Eventually it went away I guess because it's not there. What can I do?

  • Not sure what cream u are using. I use fixodent and when used correctly works immediately. Make sure the dentures are dry, do not put too muchand do not put any near the edges. Getting the adhesive out after taking out the dentures isn't fun but takes some getting used to. I use a paper towel to get the area dry, then pull the adhesive out with my fingers. Others use a brush but I have had no luck that way. I have also tried the powder and it is a lot less messier but I found it did not hold my dentures as well as the cream. Keep working at it and it will get much easier. Good luck.

    Greetings All,
I have been wearing dentures for close to 35 years and have to admit never having any success with the denture creams. I started out when back then using a product called Fasteeth powder and it was introduced to me by my father. My father was using it for many years before that.
Fasteeth when through a name change to the Fixodent Regular Hold and Extra Hold powders. These powders work sensationally. About 15/30 minutes after applying the powder you can eat with comfort and ease. I can bite into an apple without any movement in my top denture. I still have bottom teeth so I cannot give any recommendation on how the powder works for a lower denture.
So if the creams are not doing the job for you, make the switch to the powder. Read the directions on the box on how to apply. Just one word of caution do not take a deep breath right after the application. You do not want that powder sticking to the back of your mouth which I have done many times in those 35 years. However even in that case that is a small price to pay for how great the powder works for me.
Honestly, I do not know what I would do if the Fixodent Powder was eliminated from P&G product line.
    I hope this helps.

  • Hi.....Same problem!!.....My Denturist suggested 2"- 3"- or 4" sterile gauze pads and Listerine mouthwash.
Bit of a 'hassle'......but works (ok!).

  • I’m tired and concerned.
Hi.. I too am having a problem getting it all out. I have had dentures for 8 days. i just use a little in back where my teeth had previously been removed. my mouth is still to sore to be sticking fingers in there.:) and i was wondering if you swallow some will it make you sick? I have thrush so i have to take them out every 5 hours to use the meds i was prescribed. This is defin. not fun at this point. scrambled eggs and mashed potatoes have become my favs... i did use my bullet to puree some meatballs and that did work really well and was yummy. and since a reg. spoon was just too long at this point i bought a baby spoon and it has been working great. since i will be a grandma in August it won't go to waste... Thanks for reading...

    • I just got a partial from these guys. My dentist inspected it this morning and was quite impressed. I am not comfortable with it, but it is my first and I guess it takes some time getting used to these things. Cost me 350 for my partial. http://doityourselfdentalimpressionki...
    • it cost me around 3000 for both dentures, having 9 teeth extracted and the joys of digging poligrip out of my mouth. I am still trying to figure out which is more fun

I have found that using a solution of warm water and vineger is very helpful in removing adhesive from mouth and dentures. Just mix about 1tbsp of white vinegar with 6 to 8 oz of very warm water.(I like my water to be very hot like coffee) l rinse a couple of times with denture in. The warm water helps to soften the adhesive. I remove my denture and put them in the tub with vinegar water, then swish and spit to remove adhesive from my mouth. The vinegar water is also helpful for dealing with thrush. Thanks for reading, hope it helps someone.

  • Thanks for the tip Sissy. I'll try vinegar. You can also mix it with liquid dish soap and it kills some household insects.

  • Has anyone tried Seabond uppers?
What about alcohol-based mouthwash for getting out the gunk?
I like the vinegar and paper towel ideas. Will try.

  • I have to agree with Shelby. I've tried EVERYTHING,,, I do mean all brands and all versions from powders, tubes and that pad that feels like slime when you take it,, so nasty.. anyway. Time is best especially for the uppers. I buy what ever tube is one sale for the top. I don't put just those crazy three little dabs they suggest. I run it all in the grove and a little over the roof part. Then I press it into place for about 20-30 seconds. It holds all day at least 12 hours but I have worn then 24 hours also for years gluing just once a day. When I take them out the glue pretty much comes out with the denture and whats on the gum I just use a dry paper towel. The bottoms are a whole other beast. I still run the glue around the whole bottom plate. My personal favorite (although getting harder to find) is fixodents control version with the small tip. I swear its a better adhesive. On the bottoms though, I go all around the outside edge and the inside edge of the plate. Longest last time on bottoms for me is about 6 hours. If I don't eat all day I can make them last closer to 10 hours but I know to eat something softer because I won't make it thru the meal on a chewy or crunchy food. Best practice especially for the bottoms is to wait at least a hour before eating, (2 hours is prime) you can eat anything then, make it thru the meal and go a few hours after words. Once again all I need is a paper towel for the bottoms. Other wise trying to get the glue out sooner is ridiculous and I'm sure quite a show for someone to watch.. lol. I feel I have this denture thing down to a science. I used to get so irritated because sure as I wanted to eat I couldn't because I just glued or I couldn't because I knew I wouldn't make it thru the meal. FINALLY after over 20 years I've learned what works for me. I got mine done at 32 and I was devastated. Having all my teeth with no cavities you can imagine my reaction when the dentist told me they all had to go. Certainly wasn't what i wanted to hear. I was so embarrassed for years and didn't want anyone to even know I had dentures. Needless to say its an adjustment just like loosing a limb. But in the end we make it and have great looking smiles!! YAY.. One final note I'm not a big meat eater so I'm sure that will affect how long your adhesive last too. Ground meats probably wouldn't affect the hold as much as chewing on a steak. OH ,, yea and I eventually over the years found a dentist who put blades in my bottom plate so wow that really helped me eat all kinds of foods.. Highly suggest everyone get the blades but they are a bit pricey. Very well worth it. though.

  • I've tried brushing and rubbing my gums and roof of mouth so hard to get the adhesive (Poligrip) off that my mouth is one big bleeding sore! About ready to give up on dentures altogether!
